The mahouts or elephant handlers did a yeoman service to the wildlife of north Bengal by taking care of the domesticated elephant herd. Yet, they are exposed to all kinds of weather extremities, which are now more frequent than before. Amra Baundule (We the Vagabonds) a citizens initiative, distributed raincoats among 160 mahouts and leaf-gatherers at Jaldapara Reserve Forest in north Bengal on Monday on the occasion of World Environment Day.
