A group of 500 pilgrims stranded in dense fog and low tide on Sunday evening were rescued by the coast guard on Monday afternoon. The vessels ferrying the pilgrims- the mv Ichhamati and the mv Agramati- were from the state of West Bengal. The state sent relief items to the vessels and sought help from the coast guard to conduct a rescue operation. Officials said it received a message from the south 24 parganas district around 915am on Monday intimating about the grounding of the two ferries. Two hovercraft were dispatched from Haldia and Frazerganj to provide rescue assistance. The rescue operation was completed around 1pm.
