On Sunday, December 3, 2017, NEDA's convener and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma met Union Home Minister Amit Shah at his official residence in New Delhi. Party insiders said the meeting was held to finalize the list of candidates for the Tripura Assembly Election, which is most likely this week. BJP's ally in the state, the Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT), has inched closer to Tipra Motha for a possible merger.
