Giant potholes turn city roads into death traps

A pothole on a street in Guwahati, India, has turned it into a death trap for drivers. The pothole is in the middle of the busiest street in the city, and if a car hits it, the jerk is likely to hurt the driver or the rider of a two-wheeler at the back. The risk of accidents is even greater at night. The public works department, which is responsible for the street, said that the pothole was probably caused by the impact of heavy vehicles. Urban affairs minister Ashok Singhal has admitted that lack of coordination among the government departments is the prime reason for which roads get damaged often and potholes are formed. "It is not that easy as we think to ensure proper coordination among the departments as different departments get approval for different projects at different times of the year," he said. "If PWD gets approval for a road construction in May, the Jal Board gets approval for another project in August and so on this is the basic problem." He added that he would look into the matter to establish coordination among the departments.
