Ex-PM Desai’s letter written after his ’77 air crash escape now in Jorhat museum

In 1977, Prime Minister Morarji Desai was flying in an Indian Air Force plane when it crashed in Upper Assam. Five pilots died in the crash, and Morarji walked out of the wreckage unharmed. The letter he drafted in praise of the medical staff of the air force hospital in Jorhat is now available for public viewing at the district museum. Morarji's son Kantibhai Desai was also on board the flight, and he lost his life in the crash. The unfortunate incident occurred on November 4, 1977. Morarji was coming to Jorhat on an official engagement at the time. The letter was handed over by Air Commodore Dr. Sunil Agarwal of the air force hospital in Jorhat to the Jorhat District Administration. Jorhat DC Ashok Kumar Barman later handed over the letter to the district museum officer, Abantika Parashar. Barman said, "It was a big incident in a small town like Jorhat. The young generation is not familiar with the heroics of the villagers and the medical staff whom the PM credited with for saving his life.
