Drivers cock a snook at ₹5K fine for flouting rule

The Department of Transport in Guwahati, Assam, recently announced that driving on the wrong side of the road would attract hefty fines. However, drivers continue to flout the rules with impunity. The Department of Transport in a tweet back in April 2022 warned that driving on the incorrect side of the lane could result in a penalty of up to Rs 5000 or a sixmonth jail sentence. However, there is no proper enforcement by the traffic branch or the transport department regarding these violations which can spark major safety concerns on arteries such as the busy GS road. The main areas where such violations are reported is under the new secretariat to downtown flyover where people would break the "no uturn points and take an illegal turn to head towards super market or downtown other locations include Rukminigaon to the downtown point ABC point and Bhangagarhgmc road." A traffic official said they could penalise such persons and they do but in most cases but violators take advantage of the busy onduty officials.
