500 families to be removed from Lakhimpur forest land

The families living in the Pabha Reserve Forest in the lakhimpur district of Assam will be evicted on Tuesday. The forest is spread over 46 square kilometers, and is nearly 15 kilometers south of the NH-15. The families belong to the Muslim community, and they filed a petition asking for land rights in the forest area under the Forest Rights Act of 2006. The district administration rejected their petition, and allowed them to initiate steps to free the forest land. The forest official said that most of the house owners live in different places, and that they have either given their houses on rent or hired caretakers for them. The police have been deployed for the eviction drive, and a mock drill was conducted by the forces on Sunday. The eviction drive is planned to be conducted in a smooth and peaceful manner, as far as possible. The forest was recognized as a reserve forest by the government in 1941, and it has since lost its dense forest area due to human interference. After taking over in May 2021, the BJP government conducted the first and major eviction drive at Dholpur in Darrang district.
